The Dreamliner is taken apart system by system — electrical, hydraulic, fuel, engines, pressurization, fire, ice, landing gear, flight controls — and rebuilt in your mind, always answering the one question a manual never does: why must it work this way?

Along the journey the airplane becomes a city, its generators the power plants on the outskirts and its buses the streets that carry current downtown. The four computers that fly it turn out to be a ship’s crew — navigator, helmsman, engineer, and the hands at the oars — with you the captain on the bridge. The landing gear locks exactly the way your own knee locks when you stand, and lets go with a nudge from behind. A fuel tank breathes like a juice box, and would crush itself if it couldn’t. And trimming turns out to be nothing like turning a valve — it is setting a thermostat, naming the speed you want and letting the computers hold it.
